Federal Sentencing and Post-Conviction Law Firm
The Law Offices of Alan Ellis is a full-service sentencing and post-conviction law firm representing exclusively white collar and other federal criminal defendants and inmates throughout the United States and abroad.
For over 39 years, the firm has worked with defendants and inmates and consulted with many of the world's leading criminal defense attorneys to develop strategies that obtain the lowest possible sentence for clients, to be served at the best facility possible, with the greatest opportunity for early release.
According to Federal Lawyer magazine, the firm's founder, "Alan Ellis is one of this country's pre-eminent criminal defense lawyers." The San Francisco affiliate of ABC-TV has described Mr. Ellis as "the best in the business." Verdict magazine quotes other legal commentators as saying that he is "the go-to guy in America if you you're in deep trouble with the law." The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has described him as a "nationally-recognized expert in federal criminal sentencing."
Areas of expertise include:
The firm has an international practice with regional offices in Mill Valley (San Francisco) California, Ardmore (Philadelphia) Pennsylvania, and Shanghai, China. Many of the firm's attorneys have served as federal law clerks, and several are former law school professors. Affiliated with the firm are two mitigation specialists, one of whom is a forensic licensed clinical social worker, and two federal prison consultants formerly employed at a high level by the Bureau of Prisons.
Approximately half of our work comes to us from defense attorneys requesting our assistance on cases, both in the United States and abroad. The other half of our cases comes to us as a result of defendants, their family and friends wanting us to work with their attorneys. With increasing frequency, we are being called upon to consult and assist earlier in the criminal defense process. This is due in no small part to the importance of plea bargaining and the significant recognition that planning and preparation for sentencing and post-conviction remedies must not be relegated to the post-verdict or part-plea stage of the proceedings.
While we cannot guarantee or predict a favorable outcome in any particular case, we will not take a case which we believe has no merit. We will only handle a case if we think the client has a reasonable chance of success. Accordingly, when an individual or his family or friends call us, we require a thorough review of the record before we will agree to represent the person.
