Parole Representation
Prior to 1987 when the Sentence Reform Act of 1984 abolished federal parole, inmates were generally eligible to be paroled once they had served one-third of their sentence. In some instances, judges at sentencing could make them eligible for earlier release. Being eligible for release and being paroled were really two different matters. The Parole Commission using guidelines far less complicated but not that dissimilar from federal sentencing guidelines, determined after an in-person hearing at the inmate’s institution, how much s/he would have to serve before being released from custody.
While parole was abolished in 1987, the Parole Commission continues to exist for those inmates who were sentenced for offenses committed prior to November 1, 1987. At present, there are approximately 4,000 “old law” inmates still in the federal system. The Law Offices of Alan Ellis has had many years of experience representing people in connection with parole and is still representing a number of these 4,000 in an effort to get them released from custody as soon as possible.
The law firm limits its practice exclusively to representing federal criminal defendants in plea negotiations, sentencing representation and consultation, Rule 35, prison designation, transfers, disciplinary matters and other problems, direct criminal appeals, Section 2255 motions, habeas corpus petitions and other post conviction remedies, Supreme Court practice, parole representation, and international prisoner treaty transfer work for foreign inmates and Americans arrested abroad. Its goal is to secure for its clients the lowest possible sentence, and if it is one of incarceration, to be served at the best possible facility, with release at the earliest opportunity.
